Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein

100 gold standard whey protein

Generally I try and stick purely to energy-related products here on Jump Start, but this one I use every day and couldn’t pass up. Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Whey Protein is by far the best protein powder I’ve tried ever.

Protein In General

So, if you’re here I can safely assume you know at least something about protein; but for those who may not, protein is a nutrient found in many of the foods you eat every day. Everything from meat and eggs to beans and tomatoes. The vast majority of people get enough protein for their activity level, but when we work out, protein is used much more rapidly and our body needs more. At this point, a protein supplement is a great way to get what you’re missing.

Types of Protein

You’ve probably heard of whey protein, caseine, and a bunch of other types of protein supplements. Here’s a quick list of the main protein types and their uses:

  1. Whey Protein. The most common type of protein, whey, comes in two forms: whey isolate and whey concentrate. Great for beginners because of its low price tag, whey protein comes from a by-product of cheese production (yeah, that’s what whey is).
  2. Casein – Casein has a slower breakdown process than other proteins. Although Casein also comes from milk (in fact it is the main protein contained in milk), its slower breakdown makes it a great overnight supplement.
  3. Soy Protein. For any of you vegetarians out there, soy is probably your best option. Though used less to bulk, it can be a great supplement to a weight loss diet.
  4. Hydrolysate Protein. Hydrolysate comes from the same sources as whey and casein, but essentially is a “pre-digested” form of protein, allowing for much faster and efficient absorption. Hydrolysate is also the most expensive form of protein

Mass Gain vs. Weight Loss

Contrary to popular belief, protein powder can be used to either gain OR lose weight. What really matters is the number of calories you put behind your protein. Protein basically allows you to push your body harder and longer. That means more sets, more reps, and more cardio. If you limit your calorie intake with a stronger, longer workout, you will most definitely lose weight. Like I said, it can work either direction. Of course protein obviously won’t make you lose weight sitting on your butt :).

Now, on to Optimum Nutrition’s whey protein product. On’s whey protein has always been one of the most highly recommended protein powders available. In my experience it tastes great, helps me bulk up, and comes in at a perfectly reasonable price.
